Clinical efficiency of massage treatment combined with topical cactus and aloe on puerperal milk stasis
Objective Puerperal milk stasis is one of the most common puerperal complications that directly affects breastfeeding. This article was to determine the efficiency of massage treatment with topical cactus and aloe for puerperal milk stasis. Methods A total of 152 lying-in women who admitted to our outpatient department for puerperal milk stasis without pathological causes from January 2013 to July 2014 were enrolled in this study. They were randomly divided into the intervention group (massages with cactus and aloe cold compresses
n=50)
cold compress group (cactus and aloe cold compresses
n=52) and the simple massage treatment group (n=50). The efficacies of the treatments were evaluated by comparing their breast feeding
hardness and pain after treatment among the 3 groups. Results The breast feeding rates were significantly higher in the intervention group than the cold compress group and the simple massage treatment group (P0.01). Breast hardness and pain score were also reduced in the former than the latter 2 groups (P0.01). Conclusion Massage treatment combined with topical cactus and aloe cold compress effectively improves the puerperal milk stasis.
