Correlation of insulin resistance and blood pressure in patients with impaired fasting glucose
Objective To determine the correlation of insulin resistance with blood pressure in the patients with impaired fasting glucose. Methods A total of 180 patients with impaired fasting glucose collected from our clinic and health examination center of Southwest hospital from October 2012 to August 2013 were enrolled in this study. They were assigned into 2 groups according blood pressure
that is
normal blood pressure group (n=88
aged 45.9±12.5
43 males and 45 females) and hypertension group (n=92
aged 44.9±12.5
47 males and 45 females). Lifestyle intervention was taken to both groups
and conventional anti-hypertensive agents was administered in the hypertension group. Their fasting insulin (FINS)
2-hour insulin (2hINS) and insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) were compared before and in 6 months after treatment and between the 2 groups. Results The hypertension group had significantly increased HOMA-IR than normal blood pressure group (4.4±1.3 vs 3.2±0.8
P0.05). After 6 months of treatment
there were no significantly changes in FINS
2hINS and HOMA-IR in normal blood pressure group (P0.05). FINS (11.2±2.5) and HOMA-IR (3.3±0.7) were significantly decreased in hypertension group compared with baseline (P0.05). There were 66 patients getting well-controlled blood pressure (BP130/80 mmHg) and 18 patients not reaching the standard. FINS and HOMA-IR were significantly lower in the well-controlled group than those not (10.5±2.4 vs 13.7±2.6
2.9±0.6 vs 4.0±0.8
P0.05). Conclusion Insulin resistance phenomenon is common in patients with IFG and hypertension. Their insulin resistance might be associated with increased blood pressure. Successful control of blood pressure can improve insulin resistance in patients with impaired fasting glucose.
