Effect of sleep duration and quality on hypertension prevalence in Chinese male adults
Objective To determine the effect of sleep duration and sleep quality on the prevalence of hypertension in Chinese male adults. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted in a total of 4 519 male adults (over 18 years old) living in Tangshan mining community from September to October 2013. All subjects received anthropometric test
blood test and structured questionnaire survey. Sleep quality were evaluated using the standard Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The relationship of sleep duration or sleep quality with the prevalence of hypertension was analyzed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results In comparison to the normotensive population
the hypertensive population had shorter sleep duration and poorer sleep quality. Both too short sleep duration and very poor sleep quality significantly increased the prevalence of hypertension in Chinese male adults (OR=1.33
95%CI=1.13-1.56
P0.05;OR=1.81
95%CI=1.44-2.29
P0.05). But when taking the interaction between them into consideration
only those with moderate sleep quality combined with short sleep duration and those with poor sleep quality combined with too short or long sleep duration could significantly increase the risk for hypertension (OR=1.92
95%CI=1.65-2.23
P0.05; OR=2.18
95%CI=1.66-2.86
P0.05; OR=1.55
95%CI=1.25-1.92
P0.05
respectively). Conclusion Both short sleep duration and poor sleep quality increase the risk for hypertension in Chinese male adults
