Efficiency of pressure therapy on prevention and treatment of scar proliferation and contracture after epicanthus operation
Objective To determine the effect of pressure therapy on the prevention and treatment of scar proliferation and contracture after epicanthus operation. Methods From March 2010 to March 2013
240 epicanthus patients (average age 28.4±1.2) in our department were treated by “Z” plastic epicanthus operation. After operation
120 patients (average age 26.2±0.8) were chosen for pressure therapy in 1 month after operation (treatment group). These patients were asked to press the epicanthus scar to the nasal bone nearby with fingers and the pressure was 10-15 mmHg and then divided i
nto 3 groups: 40 patients for 1 time per day
40 patients for 3 times per day and 40 patients for 6 times per day. The other 120 patients (average age 29.1±0.6) did not receive such pressure therapy (control group). Results After 1 year follow-up in the pressure therapy group
the scar was flat and soft with no pain and itch. The epicanthus angel kept the same appearance. The scar proliferation and contracture ratio was 9.2%
significantly different from that of the control group 37.5% (
P
0.01). In the treatment group
the subgroup with 3 times of pressure therapy per day had the best effect (
P
0.05). Conclusion The pressure therapy with 3 times per day has significant effects on the prevention and treatment of scar proliferation and contracture after epicanthus operation.
