Visible light-induced retinal degeneration in Guangxi Bama miniature pigs
Objective To establish a chronic retinal degeneration model with Guangxi Bama miniature pig by exposing to continuous intermittent visible light
and to explore the method for examining retinal function in live Guangxi Bama miniature pigs. Methods Guangxi Bama miniature pigs aged 3-4 months were exposed to continuous intermittent white light to induce chronic retinal degeneration. Fundus photography
optical cohe-rence tomography (OCT)
full-field electroretinography (fERG) and multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) were used to compare the differences of retinal functions between the normal pigs and light-induced retinal degeneration pigs and to i
dentify optical retinal degeneration in vivo. Results As compared to the normal pigs
no significant visible fundus photographic change was found in the light-induced retinal degeneration pigs. Nevertheless
the thickness of retinal internal limiting membrane (ILM) to retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) layer was reduced obviously in OCT (
P
0.05). Amplitudes of dark-adapted combined rod-cone response’s a waves
b waves
and ops waves and light-adapted b waves and P1 waves of fERG also decreased clearly (
P
0.05). Average amplitude density of P1 waves of mfERG significantly lowered (
P
0.05). Conclusion Continuous intermittent visible light exposure leads to changes in the structure and function in porcine retinas
producing an appropriate chronic retinal degeneration model.
