Efficacy of statins therapy prior to acute ischemic stroke on intravenous thrombolysis: report of 181 cases
Objective To determine the effect of taking statin drugs before stroke onset on the outcome of thrombolytic therapy in thrombolysis patients within 6 h after acute ischemic stroke. Methods A total of 181 consecutive patients with acute ischemic stroke undergoing intravenous therapy with in 6 h from symptom onset during April 2006 to November 2012 were enrolled in this study. According to whether having prior administration of statin drugs
the parents who met the inclusion criteria were divided into 2 groups
prior use of statin drugs group (n=30) and the non-prior use of statin drugs gr
oup (n=151). Same thrombolytic therapy was carried out to the 2 groups of patients. Modified Rankin Scale were used to evaluate the recovery of neurological functions. All patients were followed up by once per month
for 3 months. Results There was no significant difference in the efficacy of good prognosis (50.00%
vs
56.95%
P=0.166)
the incidence of intracranial hemorrhage (26.67%
vs
18.54%
P
=0.309)
the prevalence of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (16.67%
vs
11.26%
P
=0.408)
and the mortality (10.00%
vs
4.64%
P
=0.240) between the 2 groups. Conclusion The prior use of statin drugs has no effect on the therapeutic efficiency and saftety of thrombolytic therapy. Intravenous thrombolysis therapy is safe for patients with acute ischemic stroke but taking stain drugs before stroke onset.
