Clinical efficacy of hemispherectomy for pediatric intractable epilepsy
Objective To explore the clinical efficacy of hemispherectomy for pediatric intractable epilepsy. Methods Hemispherectomy was conducted in 25 pediatric patients with intractable epilepsy and unilateral extensive hemispheric lesions between 2005-2010. A retrospective analysis of the clinical data
surgical outcomes and follow-up results of these pediatric patients were performed. Results The seizures of all the patients were effectively controlled. Twenty-three patients achieved Engel class Ⅰ outcome
and 2 patients achieved Engel class Ⅱ outcome. No significant exacerbation of neurological deficits was observed in all the patients. The postoperative EEG was normal in 23 patients
and was significantly improved in 2 patients. The postoperative MRI showed the contralateral hemisphere enlarged and extended to ipsilateral hemisphere. Conclusion For the pediatric intractable epilepsy induced by unilateral extensive hemispheric lesions
