Correlation of serum uric acid level and metabolic syndrome in Chongqing adults
Objective To investigate the correlation between serum uric acid (SUA) level and the indicators of metabolic syndrome (MS) among the adults of Chongqing
China. Methods The levels of SUA
body mass index (BMI)
waist circumference (WC)
systolic pressure (SBP)
diastolic pressure (DBP)
fasting blood glucose (FBG)
total cholesterol (TC)
triglyceride (TG)
high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) were measured in 79 092 physically examined residents (male 45 495 and female 33 597; 18 to 95 years old) in our hospital during 2010. Results The prevalence of hyperuricemia was significantly higher in the male adults than in the female adults (22.19% vs 6.05%
P0.01). The SUA level was positively correlated with the levels of BMI
WC
SBP
DBP
TC
TG and LDL-c (P0.05)
but negatively correlated with the HDL-c level in both the male and female adults (P0.01). There was a significantly positive correlation between the SUA level and the MS prevalence
which increased along with the increase of SUA level in both the male and female adults. Conclusion There is a positive correlation between the SUA level and MS. Controlling SUA level is important for preventing the occurrence of MS and reducing the risk of cardiovascular events.
