Anterior stromal puncture in treatment of bullous keratopathy: a clinical study of 11 cases
Objective To evaluate the therapeutic efficiency of anterior stromal puncture in treatment of symptomatic bullous keratopathy (BK). Methods Clinical data of 11 patients with 11 eyes diagnosed as BK in our center from May 2008 to now were collected. Anterior stromal micropuncture (ASP) were performed for the patients. Approximately 200 punctures were given with a bent 30-gause needle sparing the peripheral cornea. All the patients were questioned about pain intensity
foreign-body sensation
and photophobia before and 1
4
12 and 24 weeks after the treatment. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy results were also evaluated. Results There were significant difference in the ASP of pain (P0.05)
photophobia (P0.05)
and foreign-body sensation (P0.05) in terms of decreasing symptoms and corneal sensitivity before and 1
4
12
and 24 weeks after treatment. Microscopic examination showed decreased corneal edema, disappearance of corneal epithelial blisters
integrity of corneal epithelium. Conclusion Anterior stromal puncture is an effective
simple and low-cost approach for treating patients with symptomatic bullous keratopathy. If the patients can’t afford corneal transplantation for the moment
