Loewenstein occupational therapy in assessment of cognitive disorder in patients with cerebral stroke
Objective To study the application of Loewenstein occupational therapy in assessment of cognitive function and in observation of its curative effect in patients with cerebral stroke. Methods Thirty patients with cerebral stroke admitted to Department of Rehabilitation
Xuzhou Central Hospital
from September 2009 to October 2010
were enrolled in this study as a treatment group
and 30 matched healthy individuals served as a control group. Cerebral stroke patients with cognitive disorder were screened with the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) scale. Their cognitive function was evaluated with the Loewenstein occupational therapy cognitive assessment (LOTCA) before and after treatment and compared with that of control group. Results The total LOTCA score was significantly lower in treatment group than in control group (P0.01)
and higher in treatment group 2 months after treatment than before treatment (P0.01). Conclusion LOTCA can evaluate the overall severity of cognitive disorder and characteristics of cerebral stroke patients and show their cognitive level
and is of a rather good value for its clinical application.
