Study of modification of polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate electrospun fibers and its drug release ability in vitro
Objective To prepare a kind of wound dressing that has good properties and can slowly release drugs using modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/sodium alginate (SA) electrospun fibers. Methods After PVA/SA electrospun fibers were cross-linked by glutaraldehyde vapor
the optimal cross-linker was screened out based on swelling ratio. Using 3% calcium chloride/ethanol solution as a cross-linker
1 h-
3 h- and 24 h-cross-linked moxifloxacin hydrochloride (MH)/PVA/SA electrospun fibers were modified
and then their drug release abilities in vitro were analyzed in PBS solution (pH 7.4). Results The screening experiment showed that 3% calcium chloride/ethanol solution was the optimal cross-linker. The swelling ratio of the fibers modified with this cross-linker was 108%. In the following drug release test in vitro
we found that the drug could be released by MH/PVA/SA electrospun fibers more slowly with the increase of cross-linking time. The cumulative release rates of the 0-h-
1-h-
3-h- and 24-h-cross-linked fibers at 4 h were 66.63%
57.55%
40.90% and 12.41%
respectively. Conclusion The MH/PVA/SA electrospun fibers modified by 3% calcium chloride/ethanol solution has good water resistance and swelling property
and would be more suited as wound dressing for exudates-containing and difficult healing wounds.
