Modified trans-umbilical laparoendoscopic single-site varicocelectomy: a retro spective report of 46 cases
Objective To summarize our experience on a novel modified trans-umbilical laparoendoscopic single-site technique for varicocelectomy in the treatment of varicocele and analyze the clinical value of this approach. Methods A novel modified trans-umbilical laparoendoscopic single-site technique with double trocar while without any access platform which has several channels for instrumentation was created and performed for varicocelectomy in 46 varicocele patients (mean age
21.5
ranging from 15 to 29; course of disease
2.5 years
ranging from 0.5 to 8 years) who admitted in our department from January 2009 to June 2010. The clinical data of these patients that underwent varicocelectomy by this modified technique were analyzed retrospectively. Results Among these 46 patients
42 had varicocele on the left side
and 4 on both sides. The mean operation duration was 21 min
from 15 to 40 min. The mean blood loss was less than 5 ml and the mean hospital stay was 3.5 d
ranging from 2 to 5 d. All the operations were successful
and no recurrence or complication was found during the follow-up period for 2 to 18 months. Conclusion Our novel modified laparoendoscopic single-site varicocelectomy is a safe
reliable
time-saving
and minimally invasive technique. It is recommended for more wildly application because it is easy to be accepted
