Clinical characteristics of HIV/AIDS distribution in a certain general hospital from 2006-2009
Objective To study the clinical HIV/AIDS epidemiology in a certain general hospital and its prevention and control measures. Methods Clinical data about HIV/AIDS patients admitted to our hospital in the past 4 years were retrospectively analyzed. Results A total of 133 patients (102 males and 31 females) at the average age of 42.58 years were diagnosed as HIV/AIDS by the CDC of Sichuan Province. The number of HIV/AIDS patients admitted to the related clinical departments increased yearly. Of the 87.5% HIV/AIDS patients
30.08% were first diagnosed in departments of respiratory diseases followed by departments of infectious diseases
hematology
gastroenterology and neurology. One hundred and two HIV/AIDS patients (76.69%) were diagnosed in departments of internal medicine. Of the AIDS patients
58 (55.24%) were mainly manifested as pulmonary disease
38 (36.19%) as digestive disease
16 (15.24%) as nervous system disease
and others as lymphoma or gynecopathy. CT showed that the pulmonary manifestations included ground-glass opacity (GGO)
and/or pneumonia
pulmonary tuberculosis
lymphadenectasis in hilum pulmonis and mediastinum
and tumor-like change. The manifestations of nervous system were intracranial occupying lesions or low density image change
and intracranial infection. The manifestations of digestive tract were diarrhea
leanness
oral cavity mycosis
esophagus mycosis and intestine mycosis
cirrhosis
and lymphadenectasis in abdomen. Ten patients died in hospital due to pulmonary infection. Since most patients and their family members left the hospital voluntarily
only a small number of patients were active to receive treatment. Conclusion AIDS is spreading from the targeted population to the general population. Physicians in general hospitals should improve their knowledge of AIDS. Screening and examination of AIDS patients before transfusion are the major measures against AIDS spreading.
