Expression of syntenin in human glioma and its clinical significance: report of 34 cases
Objective To detect the expression of syntenin in human gliomas and evaluate the relationship between its expression and the tumor grades. Methods Clinical data of 34 cases pathologically verified human glioma
including 19 males and 15 females
with an age ranging from 17 to 68 (mean 43) were analyzed retrospectively. The tumors were pathologically categorized and graded according to WHO classification of tumours of the central nervous system 2007. The expression of syntenin protein in these tumor tissues were detected by immunohistochemical staining and Western blot analysis. The results were compared with different glioma grades and pathological differentiation. Results The positive expression cells were detected scatteredly in normal brain tissue
while not in human glioma of WHO-Ⅰ by immunohistochemistry. The number of the positive cells was increased and the staining became stronger in the tissue with the human glioma of WHO-Ⅱ
WHO-Ⅲ and WHO-Ⅳ in turn. Image analysis showed that there were more syntenin expressed with the increase of tumor grade
with significant difference with that of normal brain tissue (P0.05) . The expression of syntenin was positively correlated with tumor grade (r=0.896
P0.05) . The glioma tissue of WHO-Ⅰhad no positive band detected
while there were more syntenin expression in the glioma of WHO-Ⅱ
WHO-Ⅲ and WHO-Ⅳ in turn
with significantly differences (P0.05) . Conclusion The expression of syntenin has a significant correlation with glioma grades
which maybe play an important role in the progress of the human glioma.
