World Health Organization schema for thymoma classification: a retrospective analysis of 93 cases
Objective To study the significance of World Health Organization (WHO) schema for thymoma classification in clinical application. Methods Ninety-three cases of thymoma were analyzed based on WHO schema for thymoma classification. The histological classification
Masaoka stage and prognosis of thymoma were studied. Results In 93 thymomas
of WHO histological classification
type A in 6 cases
type AB in 28
type B1 in 15
type B2 in 22
type B3 in 9
type C in 8
and combined in 5. Of Masaoka stage
stage Ⅰin 45 cases
stage Ⅱ in 23
stage Ⅲ in 14
stage Ⅳa in 9
stage Ⅳb in 2. The histological subtype closely correlated with Masaoka stage. Thymoma reoccurred in 6 cases
among whom 5 cases was of B2 or advanced subtype. Conclusion WHO schema can be well applied to instruct clinical treatment and predict prognosis of thymoma.
